About Bewl Water Reservoir

Bewl Water Reservoir, created in the 1970s, is the largest body of open water in the South East of England, covering approximately 308 hectares. Situated primarily in Kent near the village of Lamberhurst and bordering East Sussex, it was constructed for water supply purposes but has evolved into a popular outdoor recreation destination. The reservoir and its surrounding 700 acres of woodland and parkland provide habitat for varied wildlife, including numerous bird species, deer, and aquatic life, making it an attractive spot for nature enthusiasts. There are over 13 miles of marked trails suitable for walking, running, and mountain biking, many offering scenic views across the reservoir and surrounding Weald countryside. Fishing is a major draw, with the reservoir managed for coarse fish such as carp, bream, and roach. Paddle sports including kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are available with seasonal rentals and lessons, emphasizing safety and environmental care. Nearby facilities also support families, including picnic areas, a café, and a visitor center providing information and event programming. The reservoir is accessible year-round, with spring and early autumn being especially pleasant for outdoor activities due to mild weather and less crowds. Bewl Water also hosts events like triathlons and guided nature walks. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining water quality, supporting native habitats, and managing recreational impact. Visitors appreciate the mix of outdoor adventure, wildlife spotting, and peaceful landscapes within easy reach of London and the South East.
